Astros option Abad to Triple A

Houston Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow announced today that the club has optioned left-handed pitcher Fernando Abad to Triple A Oklahoma City. The move clears a roster spot for outfielder Justin Maxwell, who was claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees yesterday.

Abad, 26, appeared in two games with Houston this season, combining to allow one run in 1.1 innings. He made the club’s Opening Day roster after posting a 2.08 ERA (2ER/8.2IP) in nine appearances this spring. In 53 Major League relief appearances in his career, all with Houston (2010-12), Abad owns a 1-5 record with a 5.18 ERA (23ER/40IP).

Maxwell will be in uniform for tonight’s Astros game vs. Atlanta. He will wear jersey number 22.
