HOUSTON, TX — Houston Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow announced today that the club has placed infielder Jed Lowrie on the 15-day Disabled List with a sprained right thumb. The club has also purchased the contract of infielder Brian Bixler. Lowrie’s DL stint is backdated to March 29.
Lowrie, 27, incurred the injury on March 28 in the club’s Spring Training game against Miami. The switch-hitting infielder is eligible to return from the Disabled List on April 13. Acquired this offseason in a trade with Boston, Lowrie hit .333 (12x36) with two home runs and seven RBI in 14 games this spring.
Bixler, 29, who can play the infield and outfield, hit .242 (8x33) in 24 games for Houston this spring with three home runs and seven RBI. He has appeared in 147 Major League games in his career, including time with Pittsburgh (2008-09) and Washington (2011).
With the addition of Bixler, the Astros 40-man roster now stands at 38.
