Tigers' Cabrera named AL Player of the Week

Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending April 8th. This is Miguel’s ninth career Player of the Week honor, his first since 2010 and his fifth since arriving in Detroit in 2008. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

In the season’s opening weekend in Detroit, Cabrera batted .455 (5-for-11) with an A.L.-leading three home runs and eight RBI to lead the defending A.L. Central Division Champions to their first 3-0 start since 2006, the season in which the Tigers last reached the World Series. Adding to his offensive exploits, the right-handed-hitting slugger matched the Major League lead with 14 total bases, tied for second in the Majors with five runs scored and posted the third-best slugging percentage (1.273). On Thursday at Comerica Park, the league’s reigning batting champ collected a career-high-tying three walks as the Tigers edged the Red Sox on Opening Day, 3-2. Cabrera came out swinging on Saturday, recording the club’s first homer of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning to give the Tigers an early lead. In the fifth inning, Cabrera connected on the front end of back-to-back solo home runs with new teammate Prince Fielder as the Tigers went on to defeat Boston, 10-0. It was the Venezuelan’s first regular season multi-homer game since June 29, 2011 against the New York Mets. On Sunday, the 10-year veteran went 3-for-5 with five RBI, including a gametying three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Tigers came back to defeat the Red Sox, 13-12 in an 11-inning slugfest. Following singles by Austin Jackson and Brennan Boesch to lead off the ninth, the six-time All-Star took the first pitch he saw from Red Sox reliever Alfredo Aceves to deep left field to knot the score at 10-10 and send the game into extras. Later trailing 12-10 in the 11th inning, Cabrera and Fielder both reached on a pair of one-out singles to spark a Tigers rally, with Cabrera scoring on a Delmon Young sacrifice fly before Alex Avila’s walk-off two run blast.
