Mariners announce full season Minor League rosters

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik and Director of Player Development Chris Gwynn announced today the Mariners Minor League opening day rosters for the Tacoma Rainiers (AAA), the Jackson Generals (AA), the High Desert Mavericks (A) and the Clinton LumberKings (A). The organization also recognized RHP Brandon Maurer and OF Guillermo Pimentel with the “C the Z” Awards, and C Carlton Tanabe with the SEATTLE Award.

The Mariners full season clubs begin their seasons on tomorrow (Thursday): the Rainiers (AAA) host Salt Lake in Tacoma, the Generals (AA) host Birmingham in Jackson, the Mavericks (A) host Lancaster in Adelanto, the LumberKings host Burlington in Clinton.

RHP Brandon Maurer received the 2012 “C the Z” Award for the Minor League Pitcher of the Spring. Maurer was originally selected by the Mariners in the 23rd round of the 2008 June draft. He split the 2011 season between Clinton and High Desert, going a combined 3-7 with a 4.99 ERA (44 ER, 79.1 IP) 16 games, 13 starts. Maurer is slated to be in the starting rotation for the Jackson Generals.

OF Guillermo Pimentel received the 2012 “C the Z” Award for the Minor League Player of the Spring. Pimentel was originally signed by the Mariners as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2009. The native of Haina, Dominican Republic hit .265 with 10 doubles, 11 home runs and 46 RBI for Pulaski in 2011. He is listed by Baseball America as the Mariners No. 12 prospect heading into the 2012 season. Pimentel will open the with Clinton.

C Carlton Tanabe received the 2012 SEATTLE AWARD that was established in 1991 and given annually in spring training to the minor league player that exemplifies the qualities of Skill, Effort, Attitude, Tenacity, Teamwork, Loyalty and Enthusiasm. Tanabe also received this award in 2011. He was originally selected by the Mariners in the 24th round of the 2009 draft. He spent the 2011 season with Clinton and also played in the Australian Baseball League this offseason. Tanabe is currently on the Clinton LumberKings roster to begin the 2012 season.

The Mariners also announced today that four players have being recognized during Spring Training for completing the requirements of two important Seattle Mariners English language programs.

Position players Carlos Ramirez (Venezuela), Mario Yepez (Venezuela) and Ji Man Choi (South Korea) are being issued certificates of completion from the Rosetta Stone English Language Dynamic Immersion Program. Ramirez and Julio Morban (Dominican Republic) were also awarded a certificate of achievement from the Ganadores Garantizados (Guaranteed Winners) Baseball Player Education Program and the English Language Instruction Program implemented by Becky Schnakenberg.
