Braves Sign Livan Hernandez to One-Year Contract

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The Atlanta Braves today announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Livan Hernandez to a one-year Major League contract. Financial terms of the deal were not announced. Hernandez will wear uniform number 61 (coach Scott Fletcher’s number will change to 62).

Hernandez, 37, went 8-13 with a 4.47 ERA over 29 appearances (all starts) last season for the Washington Nationals. Over 16 Major League seasons, Hernandez owns a 174-176 record with a 4.39 ERA.

Hernandez was originally signed by the Florida Marlins as a non-drafted free agent in 1996 and has made 475 Major League appearances (474 starts) for the Marlins, Giants, Expos, Nationals, Diamondbacks, Twins, Rockies and Mets. The two-time All-Star ranks second among active pitchers with 3121.2 innings pitched and 50 complete games. His 474 games started ranks third-most among active pitchers and his 174 wins rank sixth. At the plate, Hernandez leads all pitchers in hits (215) and RBI (85) since 1996. A veteran of four postseason teams, Hernandez was named the MVP of the 1997 NLCS and 1997 World Series.

Hernandez will be in uniform for the Braves this weekend.
