Cubs reduce spring roster to 31 players

MESA – The Chicago Cubs today sent nine players to minor league camp, reducing their spring roster from 40 to 31 players.

Left-handed pitchers Scott Maine and Travis Wood, right-handed pitcher Randy Wells, outfielder Dave Sappelt and catcher Welington Castillo have been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Four non-roster invitees have been assigned to minor league camp: right-handed pitcher Blake Parker; infielders Edgar Gonzalez and Matt Tolbert; and catcher Blake Lalli.

Chicago's spring roster of 31 players consists of 16 pitchers (three non-roster invitees), two catchers, seven infielders (two non-roster invitees) and six outfielders (one non-roster invitee).
