CLEVELAND -- Victor Martinez played with his hangnail, and now he's still not playing for the Indians.
When Martinez tried to rip a hangnail off the middle finger on his left hand Thursday, he broke open his cuticle.
"It's just one of those freakish things," manager Eric Wedge said.
The injury has prevented Martinez from being able to grip a bat, so he was out of the Tribe's lineup for the second straight day Saturday.
"I really thought he'd be back in there [Saturday]," Wedge said. "But he's still struggling with gripping the bat."
Martinez, who is batting .300 with no homers and 15 RBIs this season, received a novocaine shot in the finger Friday, so he was able to take batting practice Saturday. But he still wasn't up to playing par.
"As the day wears on, hopefully he feels better," Wedge said.
