Tigers claim Kelvin De La Cruz off waivers from Indians
DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has claimed the contract of lefthanded pitcher Kelvin De La Cruz off waivers from the Cleveland Indians.
De La Cruz, 23, compiled a 5-6 record, 4.19 ERA (86.0IP/40ER) and 95 strikeouts in 23 outings (16 starts) as he spent the entire 2011 season with Double A Akron in the Indians organization. He limited opponents to a .227 batting average against (70x309) during the season.
Signed by the Indians as a non-drafted free agent on December 8, 2004, De La Cruz has compiled a 35-31 record, 4.02 ERA (508.2IP/227ER) and 487 strikeouts in 118 appearances (105 starts) in seven seasons at the minor league level. He has limited opponents to a .236 batting average against (445x1888) during his minor league career.
De La Cruz was acquired by the Texas Rangers from the Indians in a trade on February 21, before he was then traded back to the Indians by the Rangers on March 15. His contract was designated for assignment by the Indians on March 21.
The Tigers have optioned the contract of De La Cruz to Double A Erie.
