Draft Report: Unexpected treasure

Draft Report: Unexpected treasure

Leading up to the 2008 First-Year Player Draft on June 5, the Draft Report will take a weekly in-depth look at some of the most promising high school and collegiate talent that could comprise this year's Draft class.

People across the country filed their taxes on Tuesday. We here at The Draft Report were preparing to file 10 more reports for this week as well.

This week's gaggle is decidedly college-heavy, though there are a couple of prep pitchers to balance it out. It is a nice mix of pitchers and hitters, with six hurlers total and four position players making up this week's roster.

It is becoming apparent that there's more depth at the plate than on the mound in this Draft class. That's not to say arms won't be taken early and often, but as of right now, it does seem like there are more impact players who swing the bat.

Some of those impact hitters appear to be heating up. Miami 1B Yonder Alonso is up to .358 with eight homers and a .679 SLG. He homered twice over the weekend at Georgia Tech. He's not the only Hurricane performing well. 2B Jemile Weeks is now hitting .403 with a surprising seven homers and .723 SLG to go along with 11 steals. ASU's Ike Davis is now third in Division I baseball with an .876 SLG. His 1.360 OPS is seventh. He's hitting .423 with 14 homers and 57 RBIs in 34 games. ... And finally, on the high school front, it seems that every year scouts flock to a school to see one high-profile player when another player makes a name for himself by performing well with everyone watching. A couple of years ago, there was Adrian Cardenas basking in the glow of Chris Marrero's spotlight. It didn't hurt Mike Moustakas to have extra scouts around to see his teammate Matt Dominguez last year. This year, 3B Zach Wilson may not be the top-rounder Moustakas or Cardenas ultimately became, but he's definitely caught the eyes of scouts visiting Woodrow Wilson High School in Southern California to see Aaron Hicks play.

And now on to the reports:

Roger Kieschnick, OF
Texas Tech

He's got five potential tools, though his recent performance against Missouri was rather uneventful. The outfielder went 2-for-11 with just one RBI and no extra-base hits. Complete Report

Tyler Ladendorf, SS

Cody Overbeck, 3B
Mississippi

Sean Ratliff, OF

He doesn't show it all the time, but Ratliff displays just enough pop in his bat to keep people interested. He went yard against Washington State in a recent weekend series with plenty of scouts on hand. Complete Report

Tyler Sample, RHP
Mullen HS, Denver

A big right-hander with a power arsenal, Sample tossed five shutout innings in a recent outing against Grandview High School, allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out nine. Complete Report

Daniel Schlereth, LHP
Arizona

Deciding to return to Arizona rather than join the A's after being selected in the eighth round a year ago, Schlereth has brought a bulldog mentality to the mound as a reliever this season. In a recent outing against UCLA, he showed both positives and negatives, tossing two shutout innings before being tagged for two runs in his third inning of work. He struck out five and walked four. Zeke Spruill, RHP
