Perkins signs three-year extension

The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have signed left-handed pitcher Glen Perkins to a three-year extension through the 2015 season, worth a guaranteed $10.3 million.  The deal also includes a club option for 2016.  Perkins was already under contract for the 2012 season at $1.55 million.

“We are very pleased to reach this agreement with Glen”, said Twins Executive Vice President/General Manager Terry Ryan.  “He has been a reliable reliever for us and has helped stabilize the back end of our bullpen in the set-up role.  When we were looking for someone to step up last year, it was Glen who seized the opportunity and pitched the way we knew he could, after selecting him out of the University of Minnesota.”

Perkins was 4-4, 2.48 ERA (61.2 ip, 17 er), allowing 55 hits with 21 walks and 65 strikeouts in 65 appearances for the Twins last season.  He has a career record of 23-16, 4.41 ERA (365.0 ip, 179 er) in 145 appearances (44 starts).  Perkins was the 2011 recipient of the Joseph W. Haynes Award (Twins Pitcher of the Year) and the Charles O. Johnson Award (Most Improved Twin) by the Twin Cities Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

A 2001 graduate of Stillwater (MN) High School, Perkins was originally selected by the Twins in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Minnesota.  He currently resides in Lakeville, Minnesota.
