KANSAS CITY, MO (March 3, 2012) – Royals Charities, the charitable arm of the Kansas City Royals, has announced its support of local disaster relief agencies as they assist those affected by the recent tornado outbreak across the Midwest and southern United States. Royals Charities will be contributing $10,000 each to the Kansas City chapter of the American Red Cross and Heart to Heart International for a total contribution of $20,000.
The American Red Cross has already mobilized volunteers to assist those affected by the tornadoes earlier this week on both sides of the state line – including Harveyville, Kan., as well as Branson, Lebanon and Buffalo, Mo., and surrounding communities. The Red Cross is providing a number of services, including emergency shelters and meal service for both victims and volunteers helping in the recovery efforts.
Heart to Heart International, a medical relief and development organization based in Olathe, Kan., received a $35,000 grant from Royals Charities to help respond to the tornadoes in Joplin, Mo., and Reading, Kan., in May 2011. This additional $10,000 grant will help Heart to Heart provide care kits to Harveyville and other towns most devastated by the storms. The hygiene kits include toiletries, towels and personal care items. In addition, the organization is deploying mobile health clinics to affected communities. Heart to Heart first responders provide aid such as tetanus shots and related medical care in areas where health care is not readily available.
Both organizations are on stand-by to provide additional assistance to the areas hit yesterday by tornadoes, including communities in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Alabama.
Royals fans can support the two organizations by providing cash donations via website or text-to-donate programs.
