The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has acquired right-handed pitcher Jeremy Guthrie from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for right-handed pitchers Jason Hammel and Matt Lindstrom.
Guthrie, 32, completed his fifth-straight full season in the Orioles starting rotation in 2011, going 9-17 with two complete games, a 4.33 ERA (208.0 ip, 100 er), 66 walks and 130 strikeouts in 34 games/32 starts. 2011 marked the third-straight season that Guthrie has tossed at least 200.0 innings, as he set a career high with 209.1 innings in 2010 and tossed exactly 200.0 innings in 2009. Since joining Baltimore in 2007, Guthrie is 47-65 with a 4.12 ERA (983.1 ip, 450 er), 281 walks and 602 strikeouts in 161 games/153 starts. Originally selected in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, Guthrie is 47-65 with a 4.19 ERA in 177 career games/154 starts with Cleveland (2004-06) and Baltimore (2007-11).
Guthrie has averaged 202.0 innings pitched per season since 2008, and his 808.0 innings pitched over the last four seasons is the 9th-most among American League pitchers. Additionally, Guthrie's 4.31 run support average (387 runs scored in support, 808.0 ip) since 2008 is the third-lowest for an American League qualifying pitcher. The 6-foot-1 right-hander's 47 wins since joining the Orioles in 2007 are 30 more victories than the next closest O's pitcher (Brad Bergesen and Daniel Cabrera 17 wins each).
Hammel, 29, went 7-13 with a 4.67 ERA (170.1 ip, 90 er), 94 strikeouts and 68 walks in 32 appearances/27 starts for the Rockies in 2011. Since joining the Rockies in 2009, Hammel has a record of 27-30 with a 4.63 ERA (524.2 ip, 270 er), 368 strikeouts and 157 walks. In his six-year Major League career, Hammel has a record of 34-45 with an ERA of 4.99 (732.0 ip, 406 er) in 169 appearances/115 starts. Hammel was originally selected in the 10th round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft by Tampa Bay.
Lindstrom, 27, spent his first season with the Rockies in 2011 and went 2-2 with a career-low 3.00 ERA (54.0 ip, 18 er), 36 strikeouts and a career-low 14 walks in his 63 relief outings. The right-hander has 45 career saves (45-for-59 in save opps) in his 312 appearances with the Marlins (2007-09), Astros (2010) and Rockies (2011). Lindstrom has a career record of 12-15 with a 3.81 ERA (279.0 ip, 118 er), 223 strikeouts and 105 walks in those 312 appearances. Lindstrom was originally selected by the Mets in the 10th round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft.
The Rockies now have 39 players on the 40-man roster.
