In September, Major League Baseball announced that the Mariners would open the regular season against the Oakland Athletics in the “Japan Opening Series 2012”. The Mariners spring training will include a nine-day trip to Tokyo March 22-30, where they will play two games against teams from the Japanese leagues (March 25-26) and a pair of games against the A’s to open the regular season (March 28-29). That schedule, and a TBD date in Arizona, will be announced at a later time.
Seattle pitchers and catchers will report to spring training on Feb. 11 (physicals) and hold its first workout on Feb. 12. Position players will report Feb. 17 and the first full-squad workout will be held Feb. 18.
The Mariners will be hosting their 19th spring training at the Peoria Sports Complex, and their 36th season training in the Valley of the Sun. The Cactus League will again feature 15 teams in 2012, and for the second consecutive season all teams will play in the greater Phoenix area.
The Mariners will play at least 15 games in Peoria next spring, including one when the Padres are designated the home team (March 5). The Mariners and Padres will play the annual charity game on March 4, which benefits over two dozen local causes in the Peoria area.
In addition to the four consecutive games in Peoria March 3-6, the club will have three straight home games March 31-April 2, and back-to-back home games March 9 & 10 and March 14 & 15.
Five night games are scheduled in Arizona, including three on consecutive nights. Night games will be played March 10 at Arizona in Scottsdale (7:10 pm), March 14 vs. Kansas City in Peoria (7:05 pm), March 15 vs. San Francisco in Peoria (7:05 pm), March 16 at Oakland in Phoenix (7:05 pm) and March 31 vs. San Diego in Peoria (6:05 pm).
[Start time note: Daylight Saving Time goes into effect on Sunday, March 11, but the state of Arizona does not change its clocks. As a result, through March 10, for the first 11 Mariners games, Arizona will be on Mountain Time, and the games will start at 1:05 MT/12:05 PT. For the remaining games, Arizona will be in the Pacific Time zone.]
Seattle will hold a workout April 5 at Oakland Coliseum and the regular season resume for the Mariners on Friday, April 6 at Oakland against the Athletics.
