AFL Week 6 honors go to Olt, Phelps

PHOENIX -- Surprise third baseman Mike Olt (TEX) and Phoenix right-handed starting pitcher David Phelps (NYY) are the Arizona Fall League's week six Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Player of the Week
The 23-year-old Olt continued his assault on Fall League pitchers to earn his second consecutive player of the week award by belting four more home runs, including his fourth two-homer effort, that raised his season total to 12 and threatens Brandon Wood's league record of 14 round-trippers set in 2005. For the week, Olt hit .333 and led the league in RBIs (nine), total bases (17), slugging percentage (1.133), OPS (1.545) and tied for the league lead in extra-base hits (four).

Last week the Branford, Conn. native hit .571 (8-for-14) with one double, two home runs, eight RBIs and five walks.

Olt, now hitting .344, has slammed six home runs in his last six games.

A first-round supplemental Draft choice (49th overall) in 2010 out of the University of Connecticut, Olt has been the Fall League's top offensive performer through the season's first six weeks. He leads the league in home runs (12), RBIs (39) and slugging percentage (.774), is tied for the lead in total bases (72), ranks second in extra-base hits (16), and is tied for third in runs (24).

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Branford, Conn. native hit .267 with 14 home runs and 42 RBIs in 69 games for Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach in 2011.

Pitcher of the Week
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Phelps won both his starts last week in Desert Dogs victories over Surprise and Mesa. He led the league in innings pitched (9 1/3) and tied for the lead in strikeouts (seven).

He ranks second in the league in innings pitched (27 2/3).

For the season, he is 2-2 with a 4.55 ERA with 22 strikeouts against nine walks. He has appeared in seven games, all starts.

Phelps, a native of St. Louis, Mo., was 6-6 with a 3.19 ERA for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2011. He logged 90 strikeouts in 107 1/3 innings over 18 appearances, all starts.

He was the Yankees' 14th-round (440th overall) selection in the 2008 Draft out of the University of Notre Dame.
