The Houston Astros have claimed infielder Brian Bixler off waivers from the Washington Nationals. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager Ed Wade.
Bixler, 29, appeared in 79 games for the Nationals in 2011, hitting .205 (17x83) with a double, two triples and two RBI. He appeared in games at all three outfield positions and three infield positions, including at first base, third base and shortstop. Bixler also played in 25 games for Triple A Syracuse and posted a .314 average (27x86) with five doubles, a homer and six RBI. In 147 career Major League games with Pittsburgh (2008-09) and Washington (2011), Bixler is 44x235 (.187) with eight doubles, three triples and seven RBI. He was originally selected by Pittsburgh in the second round of the June 2004 draft.
With the addition of Bixler, the Astros 40-man roster now stands at 38.
