Mariners announce 40-man roster move

Seattle, Wash. - Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced the following roster move:

INF Luis Rodriguez outrighted and opted to become a free agent.

With this roster move, the Mariners 40-man roster is now at 36. The Mariners (as well as all other Major League teams) can sign Rodriguez during the free agency period.

Rodriguez, 31, appeared in 44 games at four positions for the Mariners in 2011 (SS - 23 G/21 GS, 3B - 11 G/9 GS, 2B - 7 G/2 GS, 1B - 1 G/0 GS). He recorded a pair of walk-off hits, including a solo home run in the 12th inning Sept. 14 vs. the Yankees and a 2-run single April 11 vs. the Blue Jays. In parts of 6 Major League seasons, Rodriguez is a .238 career hitter with 10 home runs and 80 RBI in 407 games with the Twins (2005-07), Padres (2008-09) and Mariners (2011).
