AFL Week 3 honors go to Lake, Doyle

|
PHOENIX -- Two Mesa Solar Sox representing both sides of Chicago -- Cubs shortstop Junior Lake and White Sox right-handed starting pitcher Terry Doyle -- are the Arizona Fall League's week three Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Player of the Week
The 21-year-old Lake hit .455 for the week with three doubles, one home run, eight RBIs, three runs and four stolen bases.

For the three-week-old Fall League season, Lake is hitting .379 with five doubles, one triple, four home runs, 14 RBIs, 13 runs and 11 stolen bases.

The league stolen-base leader after three weeks, Lake is on pace to challenge the Fall League single-season stolen-base record of 24, set by Rick Holifield (Phillies) in 1994.

He also ranks second in the league in hits (22) and total bases (41), third in slugging percentage (.707), tied for third in doubles and home runs, fifth in RBIs and tied for fifth in batting.

He enters the league's fourth week of play riding a nine-game hitting streak with extra-base hits in each of his last seven games.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic native split the 2011 season between Class A Advanced Daytona (.315, six home runs, 34 RBIs, 19 stolen bases in 49 games) and Double-A Tennessee (.248, six home runs, 17 RBIs, 19 stolen bases in 67 games). He is a .267 career Minor League hitter over five seasons with 33 home runs, 192 RBIs and 82 stolen bases.

Pitcher of the Week
A Boston College product, Doyle won both his starts last week to become the first Fall Leaguer to three wins this season. For the week, he sported a 1.00 ERA over nine innings with eight strikeouts against three walks. He allowed only two hits.

He leads all AFL hurlers in innings pitched (16 2/3) and fewest baserunners per nine innings (4.86) and league starters in lowest opponent batting average (.078). Overall, he also ranks second second in WHIP (0.42) and third in ERA (1.08).

Doyle, a 37th-round (1,110th overall) White Sox Draft selection in 2008, split 2011 between Class A Advanced Winston-Salem (1-5, 2.84 ERA) and Double-A Birmingham (7-5, 3.24 ERA). In four Minor League seasons, he is 26-23 with a 2.94 ERA in 75 appearances.

Other Nominees
Salt River third baseman Nolan Arenado (COL), Peoria RHP Anthony Bass (SD), Salt River RHP Charles Brewer (ARI), Mesa infielder Jarek Cunningham (PIT), Surprise LHP Sean Gilmartin (ATL), Mesa outfielder Robbie Grossman (PIT), Mesa outfielder Aaron Hicks (MIN) and Scottsdale RHP Chris Scholl (LAA) also were nominated.

Arizona Fall League
Known throughout professional baseball as a finishing school for Major League Baseball's elite prospects, the Arizona Fall League is a six-team league owned and operated by MLB. It plays six days per week (Monday-Saturday) at six Spring Training stadiums in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Salt River Fields at Talking Stick (Salt River Rafters) is the league's newest venue, joining five returning sites -- Mesa HoHoKam Stadium (Mesa Solar Sox), Peoria Sports complex (Peoria Javelinas), Phoenix Municipal Stadium (Phoenix Desert Dogs), Scottsdale Stadium (Scottsdale Scorpions) and Surprise Stadium (Surprise Saguaros).

This year's schedule features the sixth annual Rising Stars Game on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Surprise Stadium and the annual championship game on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Scottsdale Stadium. The Scottsdale Scorpions are the defending champions.
