Did you know? World Series Game 3

Did you know? World Series Game 3

• Though neither the Cardinals nor Rangers scored more than three runs in either of the first two games of the World Series, they combined to score at least that many in five consecutive half-innings. St. Louis scored four in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth, while Texas tallied three in both the fourth and fifth innings.

• With Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse lasting just three innings in the slugfest, he remained winless in his postseason career. Lohse's 298 career regular-season starts are the second most among active pitchers pitchers that have never notched a postseason victory (Ted Lily, 342).

• As for the pitcher who did collect the victory, Lance Lynn became just the second reliever since 1996 to pitch more than two innings and win a World Series game. The only other pitcher to accomplish the feat during that span was Francisco Rodriguez, who tossed three perfect innings for the Angels in Game 2 of the 2002 Fall Classic.

RUNS APLENTY
Teams have combined for 20-plus runs in a World Series game nine times.
Year Gm Teams Score
1993 4 TOR@PHI 15-14
1997 3 FLA@CLE 14-11
2011 3 STL@TEX 16-7
1936 2 NYY@NYG 18-4
2002 2 SF@ANA 10-11
1956 2 NYY@BRK 8-13
2004 1 STL@BOS 9-11
2002 5 ANA@SF 4-16
1989 3 OAK@SF 13-7

• On the other end of the spectrum, Rangers reliever Alexi Ogando became the first pitcher since the 1991 Series to throw less than two-thirds of an inning and allow at least four runs. David West allowed four runs while failing to record an out for the Twins in Game 5 of the 1991 Fall Classic.

• The Cardinals are just the third team in World Series history to tally 16 or more runs on the road. The only other clubs that accomplished that feat are the 1960 Yankees, who rocked the Pirates for 16 runs Game 2, and the 1936 Yankees, who scored 18 in Game 2 against the Giants.

• St. Louis improved to 9-4 in World Series Game 3s when the series is knotted at one game apiece. Of those eight previous Series in which they were victorious in Game 3, they went on to win the championship seven times.

• The team that wins Game 3 when the series was previously tied, 1-1, has gone on to win the World Series 37 out of 52 times, including 10 of the last 11. The only exception was in 2003, when the Marlins won Games 4-6 to overcome a 2-1 deficit against the Yankees. The 1979 Orioles are the only other team since 1969 to win the Series after dropping Game 3 to fall behind, 2-1.
