A's Recall Mengden, Nuñez and Wendle; Select Alcantara

The Oakland A's recalled right-handed pitcher Daniel Mengden, infielder Joey Wendle and outfielder Renato Nuñez from Triple-A Nashville and selected right-handed pitcher Raul Alcantara from Nashville, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A's transferred right-handed pitcher Paul Blackburn to the 60-day disabled list.
 
Alcantara joins the A's for the second time this year. He was on the Opening Day roster and went 0-1 with a 16.71 ERA in three games, including one start, before he was designated for assignment April 25 and outrighted to Nashville April 29. The 24-year-old right-hander went 1-2 with a 2.67 ERA in 18 games, including three starts, with the Sounds and was on the disabled list from May 26 to July 28 with a strained right elbow.
 
Mengden also joins Oakland for the second time in 2017 as he went 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA during a two-start stint from May 29 to June 3. He is also 2-4 with a 4.17 ERA in nine starts with Nashville. The 24-year-old right-hander missed two months of the season from June 9 to Aug. 13 with a strained right oblique and went 0-3 with a 6.09 ERA in five starts with the Sounds following his return.
 
Nuñez batted .249 with 32 home runs and 78 RBI in 126 games with Nashville and was named to the Pacific Coast League Postseason All-Star Team. His 32 home runs tied for second in the PCL, tied for second in all of the minor leagues and tied for ninth most in Oakland history by a minor leaguer. He also ranked fourth in the PCL in extra base hits (61) and tied for fifth in strikeouts (141). The 23-year-old right-handed hitter appeared in 48 games in left field, 44 at third base, 30 at designated hitter, five at first base and two at second base. Nuñez was also named MVP of the Triple-A All-Star Game after going 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. 
 
Wendle hit .285 with eight home runs and 54 RBI in 118 games with Nashville. He added eight triples, which tied for 10th in the Pacific Coast League. The 27-year-old left-handed hitter appeared in 82 games at second base, 24 at third base, eight at designated hitter and five at shortstop and led PCL second baseman with 11 errors.
