Mariners select INF Gordon Beckham from AAA Tacoma

INF Shawn O'malley designated for assignment

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

·         Gordon Beckham, INF, selected from AAA Tacoma.

·         Shawn O'Malley, INF, designated for assignment.

Beckham (#6) will be in uniform and available for tonight's (6:10 p.m. PT) game vs. the Oakland A's.

Seattle's Major League (40-man) roster remains full at 40 players. The Mariners now have 7 days to trade, release or outright O'Malley's contract.

Beckham, 30 (turns 31 on Sept. 16), is batting .262 (86x328) with 37 runs, 16 doubles, 9 home runs and 45 RBI in 83 games with AAA Tacoma this season. Since the All-Star Break, the 6-foot, 190-pound infielder is batting .283 (49x173) with 19 runs, 10 doubles, 5 home runs, 30 RBI, a .340 on-base percentage and a .428 slugging percentage in 44 games. He has hit safely in 33-of-45 games since the break, including 12 multi-hit contests. He has appeared defensively at 2nd base (63 games, 62 starts), 3rd base (7 GS) and shortstop (3 GS) with the Rainiers this season. Beckham was signed by Seattle to a minor league contract on March 31.

In parts of 8 Major League seasons with Chicago-AL (2009-14, 2015), Los Angeles-AL (2014), Atlanta (2016) and San Francisco (2016), he is a career .240 (748x3119) hitter with 173 doubles, 5 triples, 74 home runs and 335 RBI in 953 career games. Over his Major League career, he has made appearances defensively at 2nd base (694 games, 668 starts), 3rd base (209 G, 160 GS) and shortstop (24 G, 13 GS). The native of Atlanta, Georgia was a 1st round selection (8th overall) in the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Georgia. In his rookie season of 2009, he hit .270 (102x378) with 28 doubles, 1 triple, 14 home runs, 63 RBI, a .347 on-base percentage and a .460 slugging percentage in 103 games, finishing 5th in the AL Rookie of the Year award voting.

O'Malley, 29, was recalled from his rehabilitation assignment on optioned to AAA Tacoma on Aug. 4. In 20 games overall (including his one game rehab assignment) with Tacoma, he hit .205 (16x78) with 3 doubles, 1 home run and 5 RBI with 4 walks and 17 strikeouts.

O'Malley was placed on the 10-day disabled list on March 31 while recovering from surgery to remove his appendix and transferred to the 60-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis on May 2. He hit .311 (14x45) with 12 runs scored, 1 double, 2 home runs, 7 RBI, 13 walks and 1 stolen base in 14 game combined on rehabilitation assignment with Rookie AZL Mariners (7/7-11 & 7/20-23), AA Arkansas (7/24-8/2) and AAA Tacoma (8/3). O'Malley went 2-for-4 with 1 run scored and 2 RBI in his only rehab game with Tacoma before being activated.

O'Malley hit .229 (48x210) with 24 runs, 9 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, and 17 RBI in 89 games with the Mariners last season. Prior to being recalled by Seattle on May 15, he hit .317 (27x82) with 15 runs, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, and 13 RBI in 25 games with AAA Tacoma. O'Malley signed with the Mariners as a free agent on Jan. 22, 2015. In parts of 3 Major League seasons with the Angels (2014) and Mariners (2015-current), he is a career .231 (62x268) hitter with 37 runs scored, 10 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs and 25 RBI in 124 career games. The native of Richland, Wash., was originally selected by Tampa Bay in the 5th round of the 2006 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Southridge High School (Kennewick, WA).
