Tolbert lands final roster spot

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Infielder Matt Tolbert had seemed like a long shot to make the Twins' roster heading into Spring Training, but now he's locked up the team's final roster spot.

The Twins optioned infielder Brian Buscher to Triple-A Rochester on Monday morning, and they informed the three other non-roster position players still remaining in camp -- Drew Butera, Jon Knott and Eli Whiteside -- that they would not be making the team.

That left the final extra utility role to Tolbert.

"He was a guy that I was anxious to see on an everyday basis," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We're looking for some entertainment off the bench -- more speed, more versatility. And I think we're going to get those things [in Tolbert]."

Nicknamed "Hummingbird" by the coaching staff for his inability to stay still for very long, Tolbert gives the Twins not only an option at all four infield positions, but he can also play all three outfield positions.

Tolbert, 25, hit .293 at Triple-A Rochester last season with 24 doubles, six home runs and 53 RBIs in 121 games.
