Nix named Rox second baseman

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Rockies manager Clint Hurdle let rookie Jayson Nix in on a poorly kept secret Monday morning -- he'll be the team's Opening Day second baseman. The timing was good, however, since Nix could share it with family.

Nix went 1-for-2 with a double, a run and a walk in Monday afternoon's 6-5 victory over the Brewers to bring his spring average to .300. On Sunday, the Rockies told veteran non-roster invitee Marcus Giles, Nix's main competition, he wasn't going to make the team.

Nix's older brother, Laynce Nix, is an outfielder with the Brewers organization. Laynce was a regular outfielder with the Rangers a few years back.

"I talked to Laynce right after the game," Nix said. "He had already heard. I had called our parents right before the game and they'd called him. Sharing it with my brother, to be able to go through the same things he's gone through, that's real special."

On Monday, catcher Chris Iannetta doubled, homered and singled to bring his spring average to .344. Yorvit Torrealba, who will get the bulk of the starts at catcher, is hitting .438 in Cactus League play, so the position could be strong.

Righty reliever Luis Vizcaino pitched one inning, gave up a hit and struck out one. Hurdle said Vizcaino, who missed much of camp with elbow soreness, has an effective slider and is trying to improve his fastball.

Right-hander Jose Capellan, who may or may not have time to figure in the bullpen decisions, held the Brewers scoreless on two hits in two innings. Capellan's spring was delayed by an ankle injury. It was his first Cactus League game.

Righty Matt Herges pitched a perfect inning, and is scoreless with three hits, two walks and three strikeouts in his last six Cactus League contests. He gave up three hits and two runs in a Minor League game Friday.
