Eyre out with tightness in left elbow

Eyre out with tightness in left elbow

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Reliever Scott Eyre was sidelined Sunday with tightness in his left elbow, which could create an opening in the Cubs' bullpen for one of the other left-handers in camp.

Eyre threw one inning on Saturday against the White Sox, and gave up three runs on four hits and one walk over one inning. After the game, Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Eyre didn't throw many breaking balls, and the problem might have been his elbow.

"He said he wasn't feeling good when he went out yesterday, and I said, 'Tell somebody,'" Piniella said.

Eyre had looked solid in his previous outing on Wednesday against the Giants, when he struck out two and gave up one hit in one inning.

Sean Marshall was scheduled to start Thursday against the Brewers, but he has been scratched from that game so he can work out of the 'pen this week. Other candidates include Carmen Pignatiello, who has given up two hits over 6 1/3 scoreless innings, and Les Walrond, who has pitched six innings in relief.

Also, second baseman Mark DeRosa was sent home Sunday because he has the flu. DeRosa, who had surgery to correct an irregular heartbeat, has played five games this spring.
