Cain, Lowry continue progress

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Matt Cain was somewhat dominant and thoroughly effective.

Cain recorded only one perfect inning out of the six he worked on Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers, but he struck out eight and allowed only two runners to reach scoring position in the Giants' 8-1 exhibition victory.

"He had some long innings," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Cain. "I thought he did a good job keeping his concentration."

Cain extended his personal streak of scoreless innings to 11 and gave the Giants their second encouraging start in a row. On Friday, Opening Day starter Barry Zito pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings against the Chicago White Sox.

In another pitching-related development, left-hander Noah Lowry continued his recovery from March 7 forearm surgery by making 30 throws at a distance of 50 feet. Lowry, who began throwing Thursday, said that he will continue to toss every other day until he can tolerate more activity.

"It's progressively getting better," said Lowry, who will remain in Arizona to rehabilitate his injury after the Giants break camp Tuesday.
