Ryan has inflammed rib muscle

JUPITER, Fla. -- Cardinals backup infielder Brendan Ryan was encouraged Saturday following a series of exams to determine the nature of the pain he's been experiencing in his right side. Ryan has some irritation and inflammation in a rib muscle, just as he and the club had suspected.

Sidelined since Monday, Ryan underwent several tests, including a bone scan that ruled out the possibility of a stress fracture in his ribs. He received a cortisone shot and will be kept out of most activities until at least Tuesday.

"[The shot] was right on the spot that's tender, so we're hoping that it knocks out any pain and it will decrease any inflammation and do the normal stuff that cortisone is supposed to do," Ryan said. "Perfect scenario, I work out Tuesday and play Wednesday on my birthday."

Pitcher Tyler Johnson also received a cortisone shot to help quell the pain from tendinitis and a rotator cuff strain in his left shoulder. Johnson will not throw a ball until at least Monday, when he will be re-evaluated. Johnson has yet to pitch in a Grapefruit League game this spring.

"It wasn't going as planned, so the next step was to do this," Johnson said. "Hopefully this will knock out the inflammation and whatever is in there and I'll be throwing soon. I'm getting antsy."
