Giants send pair to Triple-A

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Giants trimmed their spring roster to 33 on Friday by optioning catcher Guillermo Rodriguez and left-hander Patrick Misch to Triple-A Fresno.

Rodriguez, who had been competing with Eliezer Alfonzo for the backup catcher's job, hit .118 (2-for-17) in nine exhibition games. A hip injury earlier this month cost Rodriguez some playing time, but he refused to use that as an excuse.

"Wherever they send me, I'm OK with that," Rodriguez said. "That keeps me on track to fight to get back to the big leagues. I've been doing that for 12 years."

Misch was a potential fit for various roles, including No. 5 starter and long reliever. But he recorded a 12.91 ERA in five appearances, including two starts.

Misch's departure left 16 pitchers in camp, four more than the Giants expect to carry to begin the season. Left-hander Erick Threets and right-hander Merkin Valdez are on the proverbial bubble, but both are out of Minor League options. Both remaining non-roster invitees, right-handers Bartolome Fortunato (2.35 ERA) and Keiichi Yabu (2.77), have been effective. The Giants could create roster room if right-hander Vinnie Chulk (shoulder) opens the season on the disabled list or if left-hander Steve Kline, who owns a 7.00 ERA and a .359 opponents' batting average, is traded or cut.
