Hardy's lingering illness concerns

|
PHOENIX -- Closer Eric Gagne and catcher Eric Munson were among the Brewers who suffered a bout of the flu earlier this spring. They missed a day or two, then returned and have stayed healthy since.

Shortstop J.J. Hardy has not been so lucky, and the Brewers ordered a battery of tests on Friday to find out why.

Hardy stopped by Maryvale Baseball Park on Friday morning but missed his fifth straight game because of lingering illness. He has dropped about 10 pounds, teammate Ryan Braun said, and has essentially been quarantined from the rest of the team. The Brewers wonder if Hardy is suffering from something other than the flu.

"Everybody that had the flu, it kind of ran through him in a day or maybe two, max," manager Ned Yost said. "This has been three or four days for J.J., so it might have been something he ate or something a little bit more. He looks OK, just real weak. We're just going to have to take our time with him."

Assistant general manager Gord Ash said that Hardy was back with the doctor on Friday, but as of the end of a 4-3 win over the Padres, Ash was unaware of any results. The team will continue to monitor Hardy on a day-to-day basis.
