Ichiro continues to heat up vs. Padres

at Peoria, Ariz.
Thursday, March 20

Padres at the plate: Catcher Josh Bard had two hits, including an RBI single in a three-run second inning that also saw Jody Gerut drive in a run with a single and Scott Hairston bring in a run with a double. Adrian Gonzalez had two doubles, and Brian Giles had a hit, a walk and knocked in a run. Chase Headley launched a two-run homer in the ninth to send the game into a 10th inning.

Mariners at the plate: Slump? What slump? Ichiro Suzuki had three hits and scored two runs, raising his spring average from .119 to .174. Raul Ibanez added three hits in three at-bats. Jose Vidro drove in two runs and had a hit. Adrian Beltre also drove in two runs.

Padres on the mound: Starting pitcher Justin Germano allowed four runs on six hits over five innings. A botched double-play grounder by second baseman Tadahito Iguchi prolonged Seattle's two-run first inning. Germano struck out three and walked one. Germano's ERA is now 3.72 for the spring. Relievers Kevin Cameron and Trevor Hoffman each allowed a run.

Mariners on the mound: Pitcher Miguel Batista, slated to be the Mariners' fifth starter this season, allowed three runs in the second inning but little else. Batista allowed seven hits over six innings with seven strikeouts and one walk. Jake Woods allowed one unearned run over two innings.

Cactus League records: Padres 10-9-2, Mariners 9-11-2

Up next for the Padres: Cy Young winner Jake Peavy takes the mound Friday in Phoenix in a 1:05 p.m. PT game against the Brewers. Peavy is 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA over eight innings of work this spring.

Up next for the Mariners: Seattle's Erik Bedard will make his next-to-last Cactus League start on Friday against the Royals in a 1:05 p.m. PT contest in Peoria. Bedard is 1-1 and has a 9.69 ERA after four Cactus League starts.
