Johan a hit on mound, at plate

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Don't read too much into Mets lefty Johan Santana's seven strikeouts on Thursday night against the Baltimore Orioles. That stat line wasn't exactly what he had in mind.

"I'm trying to throw the right pitch at the right time in the right situation," Santana said. "That's about it. I'm not trying to strike out everybody out there. I'm just trying to throw strikes, and then hopefully they'll put the ball in play. But they were swinging and missing."

And swinging and missing ... and then swinging and missing some more.

The seven strikeouts were all part of Santana's strongest Spring Training outing to date, in which he held the Orioles to five hits and a walk over six scoreless innings.

The pitching, however, might not have even been the highlight of Santana's night. Taking his hacks at the plate for the second time this spring, Santana ripped a double into the gap in right-center field, later scoring when Jose Reyes knocked him in with a single.

"Even though I had a chance to hit today, I didn't forget that I had to go back out there and pitch," Santana said. "Sometimes you're going to be lucky. That was fun."
