Thursday, March 20

Phillies at the plate: Ryan Howard continued his torrid spring with his fifth Grapefruit League home run, one of three solo shots clubbed by the Phillies. Pedro Feliz hit his third and Geoff Jenkins hit his second in three days. Jenkins had three hits.

Pirates at the plate: Pittsburgh was limited to two hits by Kyle Kendrick, and they were recorded by Doug Mientkiewicz and Chris Gomez. Josh Wilson collected a hit off Clay Condrey.

Phillies on the mound: Kendrick shook some early rust and breezed through five shutout innings, allowing two hits. Using his sinker more, he walked two and struck out one while recording 11 ground-ball outs.

Pirates on the mound: Ian Snell worked six innings for Pittsburgh, surrendering three runs on five hits, including three solo home runs. He struck out three and walked two.

Grapefruit League records: Phillies 9-13-1; Pirates 8-14.

Up next for the Phillies: Philadelphia juggled its starting rotation and moved Adam Eaton up to start in Fort Myers, Fla., against the Twins on Friday at 1:05 p.m. ET. The right-hander is coming off an outing in which he tossed three scoreless innings, allowing three hits. Brett Myers will remain in Clearwater and pitch in a Minor League game. Livan Hernandez will start for Minnesota.

Up next for the Pirates: For the fifth and final time this spring, the Pirates will face the Reds on Friday in a 1:05 p.m. ET tilt at McKechnie Field. Lefty Tom Gorzelanny will make his fourth Grapefruit League start and is scheduled to be relieved by Matt Capps, Sean Burnett, Elmer Dessens and Hector Carrasco, all of whom are slated to pitch one inning. Freddy Sanchez is also tentatively scheduled to play second base for just the second time this spring assuming his workout in Bradenton, Fla., on Thursday goes well.
