Wells, Zambrano face Minor Leaguers

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Rockies right-handers Kip Wells and Victor Zambrano each dealt with walks and baserunner traffic while making separate starts against Diamondbacks Minor Leaguers at the Tucson Electric Park complex on Tuesday, an off-day for the rest of the Rockies.

Wells threw 77 pitches in five innings and gave up four hits, three walks and three earned runs. He struck out four and gave up a home run. Two of the runs came in the first inning.

Zambrano also went five innings, throwing 87 pitches. He gave up six runs, five earned, on seven hits, four walks and a wild pitch. He also struck out two. The first two innings were scoreless, but he gave up one in the third, four (one unearned) in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Wells was signed to a one-year, $3.1 million contract this winter and is competing for one of the two open spots in the rotation. Zambrano is in camp under a Minor League contract and hoping to have a full, healthy season after dealing with elbow issues in recent years.

The Rockies' Cactus League schedule resumes Wednesday against the White Sox at TEP. Rockies right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez will face Sox righty Jose Contreras.
