Smith had walked to reach base, then he scored on a double to left field from Marcus Giles. However, the throw from Mariners shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt bounced off his neck, allowing Giles to come all the way around to score as the ball dribbled down the first-base line.
"It glanced off the helmet, but mostly it hit me," Smith said. "I was supposed to stay [for Saturday's game], but they said tomorrow I might be a little sore."
Other than an early trip back to Tucson, the minor injury is not expected to slow him down as the outfielder battles for a spot on the Colorado roster.
In other health news, Luis Vizcaino, Jose Capellan and Victor Zambrano each threw in a Minor League game in Tucson on Friday.
"Health-wise, they're all good," said head trainer Keith Dugger.
Brad Hawpe continues to be sidelined from baseball activity with a sore left elbow. He has not played since Monday.
"He'll probably swing the bat this weekend some time," Dugger said. "We're looking at probably Sunday."
