Royals cut six players from spring camp

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Royals cut six players from Major League Spring Training on Friday, including pitchers Brian Lawrence, Carlos Rosa and Tyler Lumsden, outfielder Shane Costa, and infielders Mario Lisson and Angel Sanchez.

Lumsden and Costa were optioned to Triple-A Omaha. Rosa, Lisson and Sanchez were optioned to Double-A Northwest Arkansas, and Lawrence, a non-roster player, was reassigned to Minor League camp.

Lawrence, one of the San Diego Padres' primary starters from 2001 to 2005, missed 2006 with a shoulder injury and pitched six games last year for the New York Mets. This spring, in three games, he had a 6.43 ERA with seven strikeouts, four walks and five hits in seven innings. He showed increased velocity on Thursday against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

"We told him we're very interested," Royals manager Trey Hillman said. "Having come off the injury, he's gotten stronger, his arm feels better and we want to provide him innings to continue to build arm strength."

Lawrence will be able to pitch more in the Minor League games. The same holds true for Lumsden, a left-hander who pitched just two innings.

"He needs more of an opportunity to control the ball and repeat his delivery," Hillman said.

Rosa pitched in four games and had a 9.00 ERA, but struck out six in five innings. He ranks as one of the Royals' top prospects.

Costa batted .235 (4-for-17) this spring in 10 games. Last season, he played 55 games for the Royals, batting .223 in three different stints with the club.

Lisson, a third baseman, batted .400 (6-for-15) with a home run and four RBIs. He was with Class A Wilmington last season and hit .285 with eight homers and 61 RBIs.

Sanchez, a shortstop, missed all of last season because of elbow surgery. This spring, he was bothered by a groin injury and played in just one game.

The cuts reduced the camp roster to 44 players.
