Jays reassign five to Minor Leagues

Jays reassign five to Minor Leagues

|
DUNEDIN, Fla. -- The Blue Jays made a handful of roster decisions on Thursday evening, continuing to narrow down their roster as Opening Day approaches.

Toronto's top catching prospects -- Curtis Thigpen and Robinzon Diaz -- were both optioned to Triple-A Syracuse. Thigpen and Diaz will split playing time behind the plate for the Chiefs this season, and each has been working at other positions during Spring Training. Diaz can double as a third baseman on days when Thigpen catches and Thigpen has experience at first.

Joining Thigpen and Diaz at Syracuse will be infielder Joe Inglett and outfielders Adam Lind and Buck Coats, all of whom were optioned on Thursday. Lind is Toronto's top candidate for a promotion if an injuries take a toll on the big league outfield. Coats, who was acquired in a trade with the Reds in December, has made a strong impression on the Blue Jays' brass this spring and could be a potential callup in an emergency situation.

Outfielders Ryan Patteron and Wayne Lydon, who were both non-roster invitees, were returned to Minor League camp. The Blue Jays currently have 38 players in big league camp, including 11 non-roster invitees.
