Veterans lead Sox in win over Twins

Red Sox at the plate: Manny Ramirez doubled in a run in the first inning and Jason Varitek belted his second homer of the spring, a solo shot deep to right, in the second. David Ortiz went 2-for-3 at the plate, including an RBI double in the third. A three-run fifth inning was highlighted by a sacrifice fly by J.D. Drew and an RBI single from Varitek. Catcher Kevin Cash hit a three-run homer over the center-field wall in the seventh.

Twins at the plate: Joe Mauer belted his first home run of the spring in the fifth inning, a solo shot over the right-field fence. It came after Mauer and Michael Cuddyer hit back-to-back doubles in the fourth to score the first Twins run. Brendan Harris delivered an RBI single to right later in the fourth and hit a two-run homer -- his first of the spring -- in the sixth.

Red Sox on the mound: Clay Buchholz pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while issuing one walk. Right-hander Mike Timlin pitched one inning and gave up a solo home run to Mauer.

Twins on the mound: Francisco Liriano struggled with his command in his second start of the spring. The left-hander pitched two-plus innings, giving up three runs on four hits while throwing 53 pitches, 28 of which were strikes. Kevin Mulvey gave up three runs on four hits over his two innings. Matt Guerrier found trouble as well, giving up five runs (three earned)in his one inning of work.

Grapefruit League records: Twins 8-6, Red Sox 5-8.

Up next for the Red Sox: Bartolo Colon will make his first start in a Boston uniform on Thursday at 1:05 p.m. ET when he takes the ball at City of Palms Park against the Tampa Bay Rays. Kyle Snyder and Julian Tavarez, two of the candidates for the fifth spot in the rotation, will follow Colon. Reliever Hideki Okajima will also see action.

Up next for the Twins: Nick Blackburn, who is competing for the fifth spot in the rotation, makes his first official start of the spring on Thursday. The Twins will make their first of two trips this spring to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to take on the Orioles in a 12:05 p.m. CT contest.
