Posada, A-Rod cleared for action

TAMPA, Fla. -- Jorge Posada and Alex Rodriguez were both cleared for defensive duty in the Yankees' lineup on Monday after being limited by their sore right lats.

Neither player traveled to Fort Myers for Sunday's 8-6 victory over the Twins. Manager Joe Girardi said that if it were the regular season, both Posada and Rodriguez would have caught and played third base, respectively.

Before Monday's game against the Reds at Legends Field, Posada said that he had been ready to play if needed.

"He took a little [lesson] from Joe Torre," Posada said of Girardi. "When a player says he can play, give him another day."

Posada said that he does not feel soreness in his lat -- a muscle area behind the right shoulder -- when he hits from either side of the plate. He is only affected when he throws, and even though the area doesn't feel 100 percent, he said it feels good enough to play.

"I would like to know how I feel tomorrow, but I don't think it's going to be any problem," Posada said. "I threw yesterday and I didn't feel anything."

Posada is 0-for-10 in four Grapefruit League games this spring. Rodriguez is batting .444 with one home run and four runs scored in six games.
