Hawpe's big day powers offense

Rockies at the plate: Brad Hawpe pounded a two-run homer in a three-run third inning. Hawpe also had two singles and drew a bases-loaded walk, giving him a club-high eight RBIs this spring. Matt Kata and Jayson Nix each hit a home run in the fifth. Clint Barmes banged two doubles, and Todd Helton had two singles and two RBIs.

Royals at the plate: Mark Teahen, who had a sore forearm and sat out three games, cracked a two-run homer to dead center off lefty Chris George. Esteban German lined a two-run single. Leadoff man David DeJesus drew two walks and scored both times.

Rockies on the mound: With Aaron Cook scratched because of a sore right shoulder, Kip Wells started, went four innings and gave up three runs on three hits, walked three and hit a batter. George and Darren Clarke each yielded two runs in one inning.

Royals on the mound: Brian Bannister had his second rough outing, giving up five runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings. Kyle Davies allowed two homers and gave up three runs in three innings. Jimmy Gobble issued three walks in the ninth.

Cactus League records: Royals 5-4; Rockies 4-5.

Up next: The Rockies will start Ubaldo Jimenez against a split squad of the Los Angeles Angels at 1:05 p.m. MT on Saturday at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Ariz. Dustin Moseley will start for the Angels. Also scheduled to pitch for the Rockies are Victor Zambrano, Taylor Buchholz, Brian Fuentes and Ryan Speier.
