Mariners find groove against Halos

MARINERS 6, ANGELS 5
at Peoria, Ariz.
Monday, March 5

Mariners at the plate: Shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt went 3-for-4 and scored a run, while third baseman Willie Bloomquist, catcher Kenji Johjima and designated hitter Greg Norton contributed two hits. Raul Ibanez tripled in the first inning and scored on Richie Sexson's double off the wall in center field.

Angels at the plate: Center fielder Torii Hunter doubled, tripled and scored two runs. Second baseman Howie Kendrick and first baseman Robb Quinlan had two hits and one RBI apiece.

Mariners on the mound: Opening Day starter Erik Bedard, pitching on his 28th birthday, allowed one run over three innings, striking out one and walking one. The last six outs he recorded were on ground balls. Closer J.J. Putz wobbled a bit, getting nicked for three hits and two runs in the sixth inning.

Angels on the mound: Starter Nick Adenhart worked the first 2 2/3 innings for the Angels, giving up three runs on seven hits. Right-hander Jason Bulger held Seattle to one hit over 1 1/3 innings.

Cactus League records: Mariners 3-3, Angels 3-3.

Up next: It is back to the road for the Mariners as they visit the Brewers on Thursday. Right-hander Felix Hernandez makes his second start of the Cactus League season. The Brewers are scheduled to start ace right-hander Ben Sheets, providing for a terrific pitching duel for a few innings, at least.
