YANKEES 9, PHILLIES 3
at Clearwater, Fla.
Saturday, March 1
Phillies at the plate:
Chase Utley pounded his third double of the spring, accounting for Philadelphia's first run of the afternoon. Despite missing five weeks last season, Utley's 48 doubles tied for third in the National League. Carlos Ruiz had two hits and scored two runs. Greg Golson hit a solo shot in the eighth.
Yankees at the plate:
Shelley Duncan, one of many players competing for playing time at first base, drove in five runs with a three-run homer and a two-run double. Derek Jeter stroked a double off the top of the center-field wall and scored on the second of former Phillie Bobby Abreu's two singles. American League MVP Alex Rodriquez clubbed his first home run of the spring in the fifth. Jesus Montero and Wilson Betemit also went deep.
Phillies on the mound:
Adam Eaton struggled in his first Grapefruit League outing of 2008. He surrendered three singles and a three-run home run in the first. Chad Durbin allowed two runs on three hits in the third, then tossed a scoreless fourth.
Yankees on the mound:
Chien-Ming Wang, the likely Opening Day starter, tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit. Darrell Rasner, who is competing for a bullpen job, surrendered one run, but escaped a self-induced bases-loaded jam.
Grapefruit League records:
Yankees (1-0), Phillies (2-2).
Andy Pettitte makes his first exhibition start of 2008, taking on Cole Hamels and the Phillies at Legends Field in Tampa, Fla., on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. ET.
