After three decades of broadcasting Atlanta Braves games nationally as cable's pioneering "Superstation," TBS steps up as a bona fide baseball network this season with a package of featured Sunday games.
Opening plans for "Sunday MLB on TBS," a schedule of Sunday afternoon games throughout the 2008 season, were revealed Wednesday.
The leadoff game, on April 6, will appropriately showcase the defending World Series champions, as the Boston Red Sox travel to Toronto to engage the Blue Jays in a 1 p.m. ET game.
That will be the first of 26 Sunday telecasts by TBS, which debuted in its new national role last October with exclusive coverage of Division Series and National League Championship Series games.
"For the first time in Turner Sports' 30-year history of MLB coverage, we're proud to present an exciting weekly package that showcases some of the top teams and players in baseball," said Turner Sports executive producer Jeff Behnke.
Wednesday's announcement included the games lineup for only the first eight Sundays, with subsequent matchups determined as storylines and pennant races shape up.
Nonetheless, the announced schedule already includes 13 different teams, with the Red Sox (twice) and the Yankees (three times) the only ones due for multiple appearances.
Other highlights of the early-season schedule are Andruw Jones' return to Atlanta with the Dodgers (April 20), and the following week, a recreation of the 2007 American League Division Series as the Yankees visit the Indians in Cleveland.
TBS' announcing crew will he headed by Chip Caray. Providing updates from around the Majors will be regular studio host Marc Fein.
TBS will remain in the forefront of baseball broadcasting in the playoffs, again exclusively handling the Division Series before taking its turn with the AL Championship Series. The station's 2008 baseball schedule also includes the annual MLB All-Star Selection Show, on July 6.
