While awaiting the introduction of Silva -- the only Minnesota starter besides Johan Santana to post more than 10 wins in each of the past two seasons -- the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reminded that Bavasi's offseason agenda was adding two veteran starters to the rotation.
So No. 2 remains on the to-do list. While Santana theoretically remains on Bavasi's radar -- he must love the idea of injecting the Mariners rotation with Minnesota "twins" -- Bedard is a more accessible target.
In fact, echoing a general belief, the Post-Intelligencer said the Mariners are now considered the favorites to acquire Bedard, probably because the Orioles are more likely to drop outfielder Adam Jones from the asking price.

With Silva's signing, one of the biggest winners left on the free-agent market -- the 29-year-old right-hander combined to go 9-12 in Cincinnati (6-12) and Philadelphia (3-0) -- drew the interest of the Mets after the Phillies left the table. Philadelphia folded by declining to make a four-year offer, which the Mets, according to the New York Post, "are believed" to have extended.
Santana may be on the Bombers' backburner, but he remains very much on the minds of Hank Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman. According to Newsday, the New York brain trust continues to throw around the idea of whether the club should sweeten its Phil Hughes-Melky Cabrera offer to the Twins.
Texas continues to troll for a center fielder, a search that currently winds from free agent Mike Cameron through Los Angeles and Cincinnati. The Rangers apparently like the outfielder the Dodgers are trying to move -- Juan Pierre -- but only if he brings along a significant portion of the $26.5 million remaining on his contract. Discussions with the Reds involve Josh Hamilton, but include a price (Edinson Volquez) the Rangers may not want to meet.
Adding to MLB.com's disclosure that Colorado has had preliminary talks with the Marcus Giles camp about its second-base vacancy, the Denver Rocky Mountain News chimes in with reports that the club has also approached Todd Walker.
