Molina, Wong, Gyorko, Fowler among contenders for Midsummer Classic

ST. LOUIS -- The first update from the fan voting in the the Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot arrived on Tuesday for the National League, and a few Cardinals players have been voted among the best at their position, including seven-time All-Star catcher Yadier Molina, second baseman Kolten Wong, third baseman Jedd Gyorko and outfielder Dexter Fowler.
Molina is ranked third amongst backstops with 303,857 votes, behind Buster Posey (559,428 votes) and Willson Contreras (355,289 votes). Posey beat out Molina last season, leaving the Redbirds veteran off the All-Star team for the first time since 2008. Molina recently had a 16-game hitting streak, which was the longest in MLB thus far this season.
If Molina is indeed voted to represent the NL in the 88th All-Star Game presented by MasterCard, he would join Ozzie Smith (12) and former teammate Albert Pujols (five) as the only players in Cardinals history to be voted in as an All-Star starter at least five times.
Wong and Gyorko have received the fourth-most votes at their respective positions, and they are both looking to make their first All-Star teams. Gyorko currently leads St. Louis with a .316 batting average, and he has eight homers. Wong, who is currently on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left elbow, has a .378 on-base percentage and .792 OPS.
Fowler, who made his first All-Star team last season while with the Cubs, is 11th among outfielders in the NL voting and has 36 hits and 18 RBIs in his leadoff role this season.
Missing from the top-five at his position for the Cardinals is Matt Carpenter, who is a three-time All-Star. The first baseman is currently leading the Redbirds in home runs (nine) and RBIs (27).
