Phils have Cameron on radar?

PHILADELPHIA -- Exploring every avenue, the Phillies have asked about free-agent center fielder Mike Cameron, according to a report on ESPN.com.

Cameron appeared on the team's radar after losing Aaron Rowand to the Giants last week. Philadelphia wouldn't be required to make as long a commitment to Cameron, who will be 34 next month.

Cameron's negotiations to return to San Diego broke down Friday, culminating with the Padres trading for Jim Edmonds. Cameron will miss the first 25 games of next season serving a suspension for testing positive for performance-enhancing substances.

General manager Pat Gillick is familiar with Cameron from when the two were together in Seattle. In addition to losing Rowand, the Phillies dealt Michael Bourn to Houston in November.

Philadelphia is also pursuing corner outfielder Geoff Jenkins, and is believed to have made an offer. Shane Victorino will play either right or center field, depending on which player the Phillies acquire.

St. Louis, Texas and the White Sox are also believed to be in pursuit of Cameron.

The Phillies also continue searching for pitching. They'll watch Kris Benson throw on Monday, and are considering an offer to Akinori Otsuka, who was non-tendered by the Rangers last week, making him a free agent.
