Rangers decline to offer arbitration

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have officially decided not to offer arbitration to their four free agents -- including Sammy Sosa.

The move is basically procedural, because none of the four players -- the others are pitcher Jamey Wright, infielder Jerry Hairston Jr. and outfielder Brad Wilkerson -- is ranked as either a Type A or B free agent, meaning that the Rangers would not have received compensation.

The Rangers have an interest in re-signing Wright as a reliever and have had a couple of conversations with Sosa's agent, Adam Katz, but nothing of substance. Wilkerson and Hairston are unlikely to return.

"I think they're still seeing what the market is out there," said general manager Jon Daniels.

Sosa, after sitting out the 2006 season, hit .252 with 21 home runs and a club-leading 92 RBIs this past season. He said earlier in the offseason that he would like to keep playing and that he wants to return to the Rangers.
