Phillies Minor League review for May 8-14

Players of the Week

Player - OF Dylan Cozens, Lehigh Valley… Cozens, 22, batted .393 (11-28) with four home runs, eight RBI, two walks, eight runs scored, a stolen base and an .857 slugging percentage in seven games. He hit two of his home runs on May 12, one of which was a 12th-inning walk-off homer. It was his second walk-off home run in a three-day span. His final home run of the week was hit at 113 miles-per-hour and traveled 469 feet, making it the longest home run in the history of Lehigh Valley's Coca-Cola Park. The 6-foot-6, 235-pound outfielder is batting .370 (17-46) in 13 May games, raising his season average nearly 90 points in the month. He is tied for the league lead in home runs (9) and is tied for second in RBI (28). Cozens, who was also named International League Player of the Week, was selected by the Phillies in the second round of the June 2012 draft.

Pitcher - RHP Tom Eshelman, Lehigh Valley… The 22-year-old Eshelman made two starts for the IronPigs, combining to allow just two unearned runs in 14.0 innings with nine hits, two walks and eight strikeouts. In his triple-A debut, he tossed a career-high 8.0 scoreless innings against Rochester, surrendering just four hits and a walk while striking out six batters. He followed that start with his first career complete game, a 7.0-inning effort with two unearned runs allowed on five hits against Buffalo. Eshelman was acquired by the Phillies from Houston along with four others in exchange for RHP Ken Giles and INF Jonathan Arauz on December 12, 2015.

Lehigh Valley IronPigs - International League North Division…23-13, 1st place… The IronPigs won all seven games they played last week, extending their franchise-best winning streak to nine consecutive games. The IronPigs are 11-2 in May and are tied for the most wins in the International League this season.

Top hitting performers - OF Dylan Cozens was named Phillies Minor League Player of the Week and International League Player of the Week after clubbing four home runs, driving in eight runs and batting .393 (11-28) with an .857 slugging percentage in seven games… 1B Rhys Hoskins was 9-for-24 (.375) with a double, triple, home run, eight RBI, four walks and five runs scored. Hoskins is tied for the league lead with nine home runs and is fourth in batting (.345)… INF Taylor Featherston batted .400 (8-20) with two doubles, two RBI, two walks and a stolen base… OF Roman Quinn had nine hits in 25-at bats (.360), doubled, drove in a run, walked and stole a base.

Top pitching performers - RHP Tom Eshelman tossed 8.0 shutout innings in his triple-A debut, and then recorded a 7.0-inning complete game in his next start, in which he allowed two unearned runs. Eshelman was named Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Week… RHP Ben Lively made one start, surrendering one run on six hits in 7.1 innings on May 9… In his lone start of the week, RHP Jake Thompson allowed only three baserunners (2 H, BB) in 5.0 scoreless innings pitched.

Reading Fightin Phils - Eastern League Eastern Division…19-13, 2nd place… Reading took two of three games from both Bowie and Portland as they went 4-2 last week. The Fightin Phils have not lost any of their last seven series dating back to April 21.

Top hitting performers - OF Andrew Pullin batted .458 (11-24) with a double, home run, five RBI, two walks and three multi-hit games. He is batting .328 so far this season… 2B Scott Kingery had three more extra-base hits (2B, 3B, HR), bringing his season total to 19… CF Carlos Tocci doubled twice, drove in five runs, drew six walks and batted .429 (9-21) with a .556 on-base percentage… SS Malquin Canelo was 7-for-17 (.412) with a double, three RBI and a stolen base.

Top pitching performers - RHP Drew Anderson struck out 10 batters and walked none in 7.0 innings of one-run ball on May 8, then allowed just one run on one hit in 7.0 innings on May 14, walking none and striking out seven. He was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week… LHP Brandon Leibrandt made one start, striking out six batters and allowing one run in 5.1 innings of work… RHP Jesen Therrien earned a win and two saves in his three appearances, combining to throw 4.0 scoreless innings with five strikeouts and one hit allowed. He is 7-for-7 in save opportunities… RHP Yacksel Rios also made three scoreless appearances in relief, walking one in 4.1 hitless innings.

Clearwater Threshers - Florida State League North Division…22-15, 1st place… The Threshers dropped a three-game series with Charlotte, but then won two of three from Tampa to finish 3-3. They recorded their fourth shutout win of the season, tied for most among Florida State League teams.

Top hitting performers - OF Zach Coppola hit safely in all five of his games, batting .429 (9-21) with three RBI and a stolen base. He has hit safely in eight straight games… 1B Wilson Garcia batted .313 (5-16) with a double, home run and five RBI. He has hit safely in eight straight games and 15 of his last 16.

Top pitching performers - LHP Jeff Singer is now 9-for-9 in save opportunities after converting all three of his chances last week. He struck out six batters in 5.0 scoreless innings… RHP Jose Taveras threw 7.0 innings in his lone start of the week, allowing one run on six hits. He has a 1.70 ERA through six starts.

Lakewood BlueClaws - South Atlantic League Northern Division…21-15, T-2nd place… Lakewood went 2-3 last week, scoring more than three runs in just one of their five games. However, the BlueClaws are 10-3 in their last 13 games and are one of just four teams in the league to reach the 20-win plateau already this season.

Top hitting performers - C Henri Lartigue had a team-high three extra-base hits (3 2B) and batted .467 (7-15) with two RBI and a stolen base… C Edgar Cabral had four hits in 11 at-bats (.364) over three games.

Top pitching performers - RHP Adonis Medina recorded his second 10-strikeout game of the season on May 12, holding Greenville to one run on three hits in 6.0 innings… LHP JoJo Romero set career highs in innings (8.0) and strikeouts (8) in his start on May 10. He did not allow a run and surrendered only one hit. Romero was named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week.
