Mariners recall C Tuffy Gosewisch from AAA Tacoma; option catcher Mike Zunino to Rainiers

Gosewisch will be in uniform for tonight's 7:10 pm game vs. Texas

SEATTLE, Wash. - Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • Tuffy Gosewisch, C, recalled from AAA Tacoma.
  • Mike Zunino, C, optioned to AAA Tacoma.

Gosewisch (#7) will be in uniform and available for tonight's (7:10 p.m. PT) game vs. the Texas Rangers at Safeco Field.

Gosewisch, 33, reached base safely in all 16 games with an at-bat with AAA Tacoma, including 11 games with at least 1 hit. Overall he is batting .240 (12x50) with 5 runs scored, 4 doubles, 7 RBI and 8 walks in 17 games with the Rainiers. He threw out 7-of-14 baserunners (50%), the 2nd-highest caught stealing percentage in the Pacific Coast League this season among qualifying catchers. Gosewisch was claimed off waivers by the Mariners from the Atlanta Braves on January 26, 2017. Prior to that he was claimed by the Braves from the Arizona Diamondbacks on November 18, 2016.

The Freeport, IL, native spent parts of 4 seasons with Arizona (2013-16) after making his Major League debut with the Diamondbacks in 2013, batting .199 (78x392) with 24 runs scored, 17 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs, 30 RBI and 18 walks in 126 games. He was limited to only 38 games with Arizona in 2015, after being placed on the disabled list with a torn right ACL on May 28. Gosewisch was originally selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 11th round over the 2005 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State University. In 10 minor league seasons with Philadelphia (2005-2012), Toronto (2012), Arizona (2013-2016) and Seattle (2017), he hit .246 (676x2747) with 332 runs scored, 177 doubles, 7 triples, 61 home runs and 336 RBI in 817 career games. He was named a mid-season all-star three times in his career, including 2016 (PCL), 2013 (PCL) and 2007 (South Atlantic League).

Zunino, 26, was hitting .167 (12x72) with 8 runs, 5 doubles and 2 RBI in 24 games with the Mariners this season. He has walked 6 times, while striking out 30 times this year, and has posted a .250 on-base percentage and a .236 slugging mark. Zunino has played in 24 of the team's first 29 games this season, including 21 starts.

Zunino hit .207 (34x164) with the Mariners in 2016, while slugging 12 home runs and driving in 31 in 55 games played. He's spent his entire professional career with Seattle since being drafted in the first round of the 2012 draft. He's spent parts of five seasons with the Mariners, debuting in 2013 and appearing in the Majors every year since. For his career he's a .193 hitter in 374 big league games with 48 doubles, 2 triples, 50 home runs and 135 RBI.
