Today is a getaway day for many teams, meaning there will be eight afternoon games streaming live on MLB.TV.
MLB.TV Premium is available for $112.99 yearly or $24.99 monthly, with nearly two dozen features for subscribers to access and interact with live out-of-market Major League Baseball games at 60 frames per second on any of the more than 400 supported devices. MLB.TV Single Team subscriptions are also available at $87.49 yearly.
Here's what to watch for throughout the day (all times in ET):
PIT@CIN, 12:35 p.m.
On the heels being named the National League Pitcher of the Month for April on Wednesday, Ivan Nova will start for the Pirates opposite Reds right-hander Tim Adleman.
Nova went 3-2 through the first month and posted an NL-low 1.50 ERA to go with two complete games in just five starts, including a 4-0 shutout in his most recent start against the Marlins on Saturday. Yet despite such longevity -- he's gone at least six innings per start and is averaging more than seven per outing -- he's thrown just 435 pitches, an average of 87 per outing.
Adleman, who had been bothered by a right shoulder contusion in Spring Training, took the rotation spot of Sal Romano two weeks ago. He's 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA in three outings, and batters are hitting him at an average of 93.7 mph, according to Statcast™, which is the second-hardest among pitchers who have registered at least 25 batted balls. All five of the homers Adleman has given up have been middle-middle, an MLB-high.
WSH@ARI, 1:05 p.m.
Max Scherzer is coming off his worst of five outings in the young season; a five-run, nine-hit showing in a loss to the Mets on Friday, in which he gave up two of his seven longest homers since the start of 2016, per Statcast™.
It'll be worth keeping an eye on red-hot Ryan Zimmerman, who was named NL Player of the Month for April on Wednesday, receiving the distinction for the first time in his 13-year career.
For the D-backs, right-hander Braden Shipley will make his 2017 debut and state his long-term case to be in the rotation with Shelby Miller out with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. Shipley, 25, logged 28 innings for Triple-A Reno, going 3-1 with a 4.18 ERA. He made 13 outings for the big league club last year, including 11 starts, going 4-5 with a 5.27 ERA.
COL@SD, 3:40 p.m.
The MLB.TV Free Game of the Day features left-hander Kyle Freeland, one part of a two-headed rookie tandem in the Rockies' rotation, who finished second in the Majors among qualified rookies with a 2.93 April ERA. He finished just behind teammate Antonio Senzatela (2.81), the NL Rookie of the Month, who pitched Wednesday.
A consistent generator of soft contact, Freeland will square off against another ground-ball machine: Padres righty Luis Perdomo. In addition to eliciting a 66 percent grounder rate, Perdomo is generating a 28.4 percent swinging strike rate on his knuckle curve, best in the Majors among those who have thrown the pitch at least 75 times.
