C. Martinez returns to rotation on Wednesday

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Carlos Martinez is back in Cardinals camp and manager Mike Matheny wasted little time in giving the right-hander his next start.

Martinez, who returned on Monday from the World Baseball Classic, will make his first Grapefruit League start since March 1 on Wednesday against the Nationals on Gameday Audio at 12:05 p.m. CT, following the club's off-day on Tuesday.

Matheny is hoping to see Martinez pick up right where he left off. In his only other Spring Training outing, Martinez blanked the Mets over three innings.

"He threw terrific in the WBC," Matheny said. "And he's up to 75 pitches or so already. So we're going to push him a little bit further and get him ready for the beginning of the season."

Martinez went 1-1 with a 1.13 ERA for the Dominican Republic in the Classic, striking out eight over eight innings.

"He's right where he needs to be right now [this spring]," Matheny said.

Martinez could make one more spring appearance after Wednesday and still be rested for an Opening Day start, should he get the nod.

Alberto Rosario, a catcher for Team Dominican Republic, also returned to camp on Monday, leaving only veteran catcher Yadier Molina still participating in WBC '17 with Puerto Rico.
