Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco was placed on the 15-day disabled list with lower back inflammation on Friday, retroactive to July 5, and reliever Ryan Madson was activated from the DL, filling the spot on the 25-man roster.
Polanco, 35, is hitting .274 with four home runs and 39 RBIs in 83 games this season. He was voted in by the fans to be the starting third baseman for the National League All-Star team, but did not play Tuesday due to his injury.
Madson has not appeared in a Major League game since June 18 due to a right hand contusion. He was placed on the disabled list on June 28. The 30-year-old right-hander made one rehab appearance with Class A Clearwater one Wednesday, striking out one batter in one inning. Madson is 3-1 with 15 saves and a 2.03 ERA in 31 appearances for the Phillies.
In addition, right-hander Vance Worley was recalled from Triple-A to take the spot of right-hander Scott Mathieson, who was optioned to Lehigh Valley on Sunday. Worley is scheduled to start for the Phillies on Friday night against the New York Mets at Citi Field.
