Arizona shines in Pitch, Hit & Run
PHOENIX -- Three Arizona kids represented the D-backs well in the 2011 Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run competition.

Ryan Novis from Tempe finished won the 13-14 year-old boys division, Lita Vorseth of Mesa was the runner-up in the 7-8 year-old girls division and Richelyn Villanueva of Winslow finished third in the 13-14 year-old girls division.

The 24 national finalists participated in the official MLB youth skills competition that was held as part of Gatorade All-Star Workout Day.

Pitch, Hit & Run invites youth to demonstrate their skills by competing in pitching, hitting and running competitions through four levels of competition, beginning at the local level, which can be hosted by organizations, leagues or volunteers within a community and continuing through sectional and team competitions.

Other winners were: Brianna Mendez from Marina, Calif., in the 7-8 year-old girls division; Emeka Egbuka from DuPont, Wash., in the 7-8 year-old boys division; Kallie Anderson from Navarre, Fla., in the 9-10 year-old girls division; Nicholas Biddison from Glen Allen, Va., in the 9-10 year-old boys division; Sierra Huerta from Filmore, Calif., in the 11-12 year-old girls division; Jack Darden from Smithfield, Va., in the 11-12 year-old boys division; and Makenna Grewe from San Diego, Calif., in the 13-14 year-old girls division.

All 30 MLB clubs hosted championships at their ballparks before the top three competitors nationwide from each age group advanced to the finals in Phoenix.

In addition to the Pitch, Hit & Run Finals, the 24 finalists made a special trip to All-Star FanFest.
